| Description |
English: Soap Rock, Gew-graze Soap Rock gets its name from the outcrop of serpentine [or soapstone]found there. There used to be a small mine here and Cornish serpentine was used in the C19th in particular to produce carved ornaments and funerary monuments.
The rock, cliffs and surrounding land are part of the Lizard National Nature Reserve, a complex site that extends to some 1600 ha. The reserve is a complex of numerous isolated sites and has two main habitat types: coastal grasslands & heaths and inland heaths. The Lizard is noted for its rich flora with 18 rare plant species growing in the area. There is a diverse range of heathland and coastal habitats and the steep cliffs provide nesting sites for ravens, choughs, peregrine falcons and numerous species of gulls. Inland the heathland supports a diverse collection of heathers including the rare Cornish heath, a type unique to the area. |
