Summary edit

Description
English: Built in 1908-1910, this Beaux Arts-style building was designed by Henry Hornbostel to serve as a military memorial for Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, and was funded by the Grand Army of the Republic. The building is the largest memorial dedicated to all armed forces branches, and was originally conceived as a memorial to honor the area’s Civil War veterans. The building features a limestone-clad exterior with a pyramidal hipped tile roof, a decorative entablature with reliefs and acroterions at the base of the hipped roof, a decorative lantern at the top of the hipped roof, doric pilasters and fluted doric columns, roman lattice motif screens, a projected entrance vestibule with decorative trim and a sculpture atop the roof, cornices with modillions and dentils, projected end bays with partially curved facades, decorative lamppost-style light fixtures flanking the main entrance doors, and a large grassy front lawn with japanese maple trees, flanking a large, terraced staircase that rises up from 5th Avenue. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and is a contributing structure in the Schenley Farms Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
