His familyAvere so strict that amongst her new relations Elizabethfound herself the gay one of the family, instead of thestrict one as she had been in her oaau home. The Frys lived in London, in the city, as businessmen then did ; later they lived also at Flasket House inEssex, then a beautiful country place, but noAv coveredby the croAvded population of East Ham. They had alarge family, eleven children in all, and Mrs. Fry was de-voted to her husband and her children, but from the first ELIZABETH FRY 87 she did not feel that on their account she must give up

AmongstFriends it is the constant habit to trust to the guidanceof the Holy Spirit to show both what should be doneand to gain strength to do it. As a young womanMrs. Fry had felt shy even at reading the Bible atfamily prayers in her OAvn house. As she grew oldershe began to feel that it might be her duty to speak atthe Friends Meetings. She seemed at last to be drivenby the Holy Spirit to do so, and though frightenedbeforehand, when once she had begun all was easy.The Meeting which she attended was pleased with herspeaking and chose her for one of their regular ministers.This was when she Avas thirty-one and already themother of seven children. After this she was a frequentspeaker at Friends Meetings all over the country. The Friends as a body were always anxious to helpsuffering
