Shesucceeded in dividing them into classes of twelve witha monitor to keep order over each, and found a cornerof the ship where a school could be arranged for thechildren, with one of the convicts as teacher. To getoccupation for the women she collected great quantitiesof scraps of cloth of all kinds, and set them to makepatchwork quilts, which she heard would easily be soldin the colonies. In this way they were able to earn alittle money to help them when they came to settle ina new land. She gave Bibles and prayer-books to themonitors for the use of their classes, and made arrange-ments for those who wished, to learn to read. Whenthe day came for the ship to sail, Mrs. Fry was there tosay a last good-bye. 94 SOME FAMOUS WOMEN into the rigging so as to see better what was going on,even the crews in neighbouring ships leant over thesides to watch. Mrs. Fry opened her Bible and amidstprofound silence read some verses in her beautiful clearvoice. Then she paused for a moment, knelt down onthe deck and prayed for Gods blessing, whilst many ofthe women wept. After this a boat carried her to theshore, and the women strained their eyes to see her aslong as possible. Mrs. Frys work at Newgate was talked about every-where. People of all kinds—bishops, ministers ofreligion, great nobles, and smart ladies, even membersof the royal family—came to Newgate to hear Mrs. Fryteach and pray with the prisoners. It became a fashion-able amusement, but the solemn scene could not fail toaffect even the most frivolous. As they listened to Mrs.Frys winning voice, with its beautiful silvery tones, theyforgot to think of the prisoners and thought only of theway in which the words she had spoken touched their
