Summary edit

Description
English: Local inhabitants, Nesle, France, during World War I. A street scene in Nesle showing two local women talking to a group of French soldiers. British soldiers are watching in the background. The French soldiers can be identified by the lighter-coloured uniforms and the different shaped steel helmets with a ridge from back to front.

Communication between Allied troops and local inhabitants must often have been difficult. Many of the British officers, who had probably been to public or grammar schools, would have had some French language. The majority of the troops, however, would only have picked up a few words at the most.
