Summary edit

Description

This is one of only two genuine surviving Sopwith Triplanes. The other is at the RAF Museum at Hendon. This aeroplane is believed to have been built as 'N5486' which was supplied to the Russian government in 1917 for evaluation. Fitted with skis, it was later captured by the Bolshevists and used as a trainer in the Red Air Force. The airframe appears to be largely original, although the cowling and undercarriage are not. Previously dark green and numbered '5', it is now in an indescribably bright blue, for unknown reasons! A photo of the aircraft on skis shows it appearing to be in standard RNAS colours but with a white cowling and Russian star insignia under both ends of each wing. It remains on display in the original display hangar of the Russian Air Force Museum. Monino, Russia.
