DescriptionSouthampton geothermal plant - geograph.org.uk - 331850.jpg |
English: Southampton geothermal plant A well 1.8km deep was dug here in 1986 to tap warm (76 degrees) groundwater in an aquifer in Triassic sandstones below. The pressure the water is under ensures it rises to within 100m of the surface, and that water removed is replaced at the bottom of the well - though the aquifer is a finite size so this isn't strictly a renewable energy source, but it doesn't produce CO2. It is then a relatively cheap job to pump the water the remaining height and run it through a heat exchanger to transfer the heat to clean fresh water (the water from the well is salty, but otherwise clean). This is then pumped around 11km of mains (jointly with output from a combined heat and power plant) to heat buildings in a 2km radius, such as the town hall, some hotels and blocks of flats. The water from the well is released into the river Test. |
