Summary edit

Description
English: Speckled Wood Butterfly (Pararge aegeria). The speckled wood is a common woodland butterfly which is widespread throughout Britain but becomes less common further north. During the last 200 years, this species disappeared from much of its range during the last half of the nineteenth and early part of the twentieth century, and was found only in south-west England, parts of Wales, and western Scotland. After the 1920s, however, it began to recolonise its former range, and this expansion continues. These butterflies can be found in woodlands where the males can be seen perching in patches of sunlight, intercepting intruding butterflies or patrolling an area in search of females. This species does not usually feed on flowers but on honeydew produced by aphids. For a view of this particular location see > 1416216.
