Title |
English: Spectators watching a circus parade on Second Avenue, Seattle, circa 1900 |

Description |
English: Circus parades were always popular with Seattleites. Here, a crowd watches an elephant and rider at the corner of Second Avenue and James Street. The large brick building across the street is the Butler Hotel, and the pale building to the left is a corner of the Seattle Hotel. Handwritten on verso: Street Scene on Circus day, Seattle Wash.
Probably the John Robinson circus, which visited Seattle on July 22, 1890. Here's an ad in the P-I from a few days before and Here's a P-I article from the day after that recaps the events and mentions the elephants. And as a bonus, a progress report on the Bailey Building (referred to here as the Harrisburg Building) from 6 days after the circus parade, mentioning how a good share of the first story is up. |

Date |
MOHAI said circa 1900 date QS:P571,+1900-00-00T00:00:00Z/9,P1480,Q5727902 , but given that the office building that became the Butler Hotel is complete and the Bailey Building (still extant 2021 as the Broderick
Building) is barely started: between September 1889 and 1890date QS:P571,+1850-00-00T00:00:00Z/7,P1319,+1889-09-00T00:00:00Z/10,P1326,+1890-00-00T00:00:00Z/9 . As discussed in the description, most likely 1890-07-22. |

Butler Hotel. At the time of this photo it would still have been an office building, not yet a hotel. Plans for the building were announced July 3, 1889; not sure of the date of completion. The lower two stories of this building at the northwest corner of Second and James still stand as of 2021; the upper portion was lost in the 1930s; it has since been replaced by a multi-story parking lot. See Summary for 601 2nd AVE / Parcel ID 0939000155, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods for more details.
Despite MOHAI's dating of this as circa 1900, this has to be at least a decade earlier, because construction on the Bailey Building (still extant 2021 as the Broderick Building) is barely started. Compare:
