1. Spermatogenesis is the production of sperm in males that use the process of meiosis and maturation which creates sperm cells called spermatozoa. It takes place in the seminiferous tubules within the testes. Spermatogenesis begins with a primary spermatocyte containing forty-six chromosomes. From there it divides into two secondary spermatocytes each containing twenty-three chromosomes during meiosis I. Each secondary spermatocyte creates two spermatids during meiosis II making four spermatids all together. These spermatids mature into spermatozoa, also called sperm cells. Spermatozoa are the male gametes for sexually reproducing organisms. In humans the process of spermatogenesis is approximately a sixty-four day process. 1. Primary spermatocyte 2.
