Summary edit

Description
English: Spiriferid brachiopods in the Devonian of New York State, USA

Shales at this outcrop are fossiliferous. Seen this day: high-spired gastropods (Palaeozygopleura hamiltoniae); low-spired gastropods (Bembexia sulcomarginata), some of which have encrusting bryozoans; phacopide trilobites; bivalves (Nuculoidea deceptriformis); spiriferid brachiopods; cephalopods; strophomenid brachiopod with an encrusting inarticulate brachiopod; lingulid brachiopod in a nodule.

The fossils in the photo are spiriferid brachiopods. Brachiopods are sessile, benthic, filter-feeding, marine invertebrates. They first appear in Cambrian rocks and were abundant in Earth's oceans throughout the Paleozoic. They were also common in Mesozoic oceans, but are scarce in modern oceanic biotas. Brachiopods have two shells, called valves, that are usually calcareous (made of calcite - CaCO3 - calcium carbonate). Each shell of a brachiopod is bilaterally symmetrical, unlike each shell of a bivalve (clam).

Classification: Animalia, Brachiopoda, Articulata (a.k.a. Rhynchonelliformea), Spiriferida

Stratigraphy: Solsville Shale Member, Marcellus Formation, Middle Devonian

Locality: Morrisville North Outcrop - roadcut on the eastern side of Swamp Road, just south of the Gill Road-Swamp Road intersection, north of the town of Morrisville, Madison County, central New York State, USA (42° 56’ 04.82” North latitude, 75° 39’ 47.25” West longitude)
