English: St. Columba Roman Catholic Church, 429 East Eagle Street at Hickory Street, Buffalo, New York, as it looked in 1914. Founded in 1888 to serve what was then a majority-Irish district on the Near East Side without a conveniently located Catholic church, St. Columba's services were held at first in a converted tenement house before the permanent church seen here was completed in 1892. The work of an unknown architect, it was a relatively austerely decorated Romanesque-style building whose interior was centered on a marble altar topped with a Celtic cross. Over the years, the ethnic makeup of the congregation changed from Irish to Italian and then became largely Hispanic after 1960, when St. Lucy's parish was dissolved and its congregation merged into St. Columba's. The parish was long famous as the home of the "Printers' Mass", which took place at 1:30AM on Sunday mornings from 1925 until 1971 for the benefit of late-shift newspaper workers. In 1987, some years after a fire destroyed the latter church, St. Columba merged with St. Brigid Catholic Church, and the combined SS. Columba-Brigid continued to use the building seen here until it was demolished after a 2004 fire. |
