Summary edit

Description
English: St. John's United Church of Christ, 733 Central Avenue, Dunkirk, New York, October 2022. Dedicated in November 1955 after an eleven-month, $165,000 construction process, this handsome church and attached fellowship hall sport a Late Colonial Revival design that's fairly standard both of the architectural output of the Buffalo-based firm of Shelgren & Whitman as well as the era's church design in general. Among the characteristics attesting to the style are an exterior wherein dark red brick contrasts sharply in color with light stone trim, a careful vertical symmetry to the façade, an elegant louvered copper-topped cupola serving as an ersatz steeple, and stone quoins framing the façade vertically. Note also the requisite Classical influences, which are quite a bit subtler than usual: the shallow-pitched front-gabled roof comes with gable returns on the bottom ends, suggestive of a Greek-style broken pediment. The interior is finished in whitewashed wood with cherry trim. The history of what was originally called St. John's German Evangelical Church dates to 1856, when the Rev. George S. Voigt of Buffalo journeyed to town to help in the organizational efforts of 25 Dunkirk residents who adhered to the denomination; their original church building, constructed two years later, stood on the southwest corner of East 4th and Deer Streets and served the congregation until April 1954.
