DescriptionSt. Lawrence's Church - geograph.org.uk - 538455.jpg |
English: St. Lawrence's Church. St. Lawrence's Church of Ireland (Anglican), with its square tower, standing at the top of a lane way off Martin's Row, Chapelizod. It is closely surrounded by buildings and therefore difficult to photograph. It is beside the gaunt three-storey house 537052 that provided the setting for Sheridan Le Fanu's novel 'The House by the Churchyard'. T. Wren, in his book "The Villages of Dublin", says that the church stands on the site of the Chapel of Isolde, Séipéal Iosóid in Irish. Isolde was the daughter of the 6th century Irish King Aengus. She had a legendary romance with Tristan, on which Wagner's opera Tristan and Isolda is based. |
