Summary edit

Description
English: Built in 1866-1868, this Gothic Revival-style building was designed by Gordon W. Lloyd and J. S. Fairfax for the congregation of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, the mother church of the West Virginia Episcopal Diocese, replacing the previous 30-year-old church. The church saw the addition of a rectory to the north in 1892, which was renovated and expanded in 1955-1956 under the direction of John J. Reitz to serve as a parish house. The building is clad in rough-hewn stone with a front-gable roof, a tower at the northwest corner of the building with a tall spire and belfry, gothic arched stained glass windows and transoms, buttresses on the side facades, a semi-enclosed front entrance vestibule with stained glass windows and open arched entrance portals, a small rose window on the gable end of the west facade with a Star of David motif, and a parish hall on the north side of the building with a front gable parapet, a front arcade, a projected entrance portal, and brick cladding on the north and east facades. The building is a contributing structure in the Wheeling Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The building remains in use by the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church congregation.
