Again she called, HOW TWO DOROTHYS RAN AWAY FROM THE BRITISH. 7*7 and again, then ran downstairs in alarm. Shewas all alone in the big house! Never mind, Dorothy said bravely, as shecame back to her post. Father will comehome soon. All that day, too, Dorothys face was pressedagainst the window. In every squad of retreat-ing soldiers, growing less and less frequent asthe day wore on, she expected to see her father,and her heart grew heavier and more frightened troops through the streets, this way and that,but all toward the Capitol; and then, in ashort time, Dorothy saw a great ■flame shoot upfrom the wooden bridge thai joined the twoparts of the building. Surely .now, the little girl cried aloud, what father was afraid of has happened ! Imust go right to Mrs. Madison. She fastened on her bonnet with tremblinghands, and, not daring to light a candle, groped

As the twilightdeepened she saw a great light shining from thesoutheast, but she did not know it was theNavy-yard, set on fire by the escaping officers.It made the street as bright as day. Presentlyshe heard the music of approaching soldiers. Now at last, thought Dorothy, father iscoming home. But when they came nearer, and she saw thattheir coats were red, the little girl shrank backin alarm, and her heart for a moment stoppedbeating. Faster and faster came the British her way downstairs. When she reached theparlor she hesitated. Poor little pier-glass girl! she said softly. She opened the parlor door, and felt her wayaround the room until her hand touched thecold glass; then, leaning forward, she kissed thereflection she could but dimly see. Good-by, dear, she whispered. Half ashamed of the action, yet with a greatlump choking in her throat, Dorothy made herway to the front door
