Then, with a hammer andchisel, he attacked the copper bottom of the boiler. He w«as still pounding and cutting when pres-ently there was the sound of hurried footstepswithout, the door flew open, and a voice ex-claimed : For goodness sake, young man, whatare you doing? Why are you not at your wire,trying to stop the other train? It was none other than the division superinten-dent of the road, who had been aboard the Sunset. Only pausing a moment in his work, Alex re-plied : I cant reach anybody, sir, the wire is soweak; and I am making a battery of that water-cooler, to strengthen it. It s the only hope, sir. The superintendent uttered a horrified excla-mation, then quickly added: Here, cant I help? Yes, sir, replied Alex, promptly. Lift upthe stove and slide out the floor-board.
