| Description |
English: "The Bronze Horseman," in a park near the Neva River, is a symbol of St. Petersburg. It is an equestrian statue of Tsar Peter the Great, commisseioned by Empress Catherine the Great. It took 12 years to create the pedestal, horse, and rider, 1770-1782. The inscription is "Peter the First, Catherine the Second, 1782," in Latin on this side and Russian on the other side.
The granite boulder used for the pedestal originally weighed about 1,500 metric tons. It is said to be the largest stone ever moved by man. It took nine months to move the boulder 6 km (4 miles) from its original location in Finland to the Gulf of Finland, where it could then be transported by water to St. Petersburg. |
