ROYAL GATEWAY TO CHINA'S EXHIBIT

This elaborate gateway, rich in color effects and with quaint triple roofs uturned at the corners, led to the Chinese Pavilion, a reproduction of the country seat of Prince Pu Lun, the imperial Commissioner to the Exposition. It stood between the English Building and that of Belgium. The main building was erected on three sides of a court on which the apartments opened. The doors were covered with wood carved to resemble wrought metal, and the wall was incrusted with ivory in the most delicate workmanship. The whole was gorgeous with gold, scarlet, blue and ebony. Part of the plan was designed by Wong Kai Kah, the wife of the Vice-Commissioner. The court had all the effect of a garden, enhanced by a goldfish pool in the center, set in a mass of Chinese roses, lilies and peonies. The interior was sumptuous with Chinese rugs and carvings, while the furniture of the bedroom and the reception room was as extravagant in color as the exterior.
