WAR DEPARTMENT EXHIBIT

Of greatest interest to the patriotic American citizen were the large cannon exhibited by the War Department. The Ordnance Department of the United States has always maintained a high standard and many important inventions have been made by its members. Before an officer can be assigned to this department, he must pass a rigid examination in which his professional qualifications are thoroughly tested, especially his knowledge of mechanical engineering in general and its application to the engines of war. The United States maintains two government gun factories, one at Watervliet, N.Y.,for the army, and one at the navy yard in Washington D. C., for the naval guns. Small arms for the army and navy are made at the Army Armory at Springfield, Mass., and the amunition for them at Frankfort Arsenal, near Philadelphia. Rock Island Arsenal, Ill., makes mobile gun carriages, harness and other equipment for the army.
