Summary edit

Description
English: Example of the St David's Tartan, chosen by the majority of people in a poll, who no doubt admired the fact that it featured all of the Wales Flag colours in it.

Nowadays with Welsh nationalism on the rise, a range of Welsh tartans and modern national costumes have been produced at the Cambrian Woolen Mill, Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, which are made into shawls for ladies and cilts (Welsh kilts) for men, amongst other things.

Some have mocked at the Welsh's adoption of cilts but they should be aware that it was in fact the Chinese who first invented tartan over 3000 years ago. The St David's Tartan or brithwe Dewi Sant is the most popular, but individual family tartans are now being produced, despite there being little evidence that the Welsh (or the scots, for that matter) traditionally used tartan to identify clans. In fact it was more of a status symbol; simply put - the more and fancier colours woven into the design demonstrated the wealth and standing of the wearer to others. People too poor to afford dies used the different brown, black and white wool from the sheep to make basic, earth tone designs, hench bright colours also showed that you had money.

Although they are generally seen these days in formal settings like weddings, we see an icrease in the number of people wearing their kilt to a rubgy or football match, paired with the ever-present jersey, of course.
