Description
English: Arms of Cottrell-Dormer family of Rousham Hall, Oxfordshire. Arms of Dormer: Azure, ten billets 4,3,2 & 1 or issuant from a chief of the last a demi-lion rampant sable; arms of Cottrell: Argent, a bend nebulée sable gutée d'eau between three escallops of the second. ( Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry, 15th Edition, ed. Pirie-Gordon, H., London, 1937, p.627). Stained glass window, Church of Saint Leonard and Saint James, Rousham. In 1649 the estate was inherited by Robert Dormer's son, also Robert. He left the house much as his father had created it, only repairing the damage of the Civil War. He married the only daughter and heiress of "D. Sherborne".(Burke)
  • Centre, bottom: Cottrell with inescutcheon of pretence for Caesar (Gules, three roses argent on a chief of the second three roses of the first fesswise) for Sir Charles Cottrell-Dormer (d.1779), of Rousham, Master of the Ceremonies, (son and heir of Sir Clement Cottrell-Dormer (d.1758)), who married Jane Caesar, a daughter and co-heiress of Charles Adelmare Caesar; (Burke)
  • Centre, top: Dormer quartering Cottrell impaling Strickland (Gules, a chevron or between three crosses patée argent on a canton ermine a stag's head erased proper (An Historical and Architectural Description of the Priory Church of Bridlington, By Marmaduke Prickett, p.121[1])), for Charles Cottrell-Dormer (born 1801) (son of Sir Clement Cottrell-Dormer (d.1808) and Margaret Robinson) who in 1826 married Frances Elizabeth Strickland, eldest daughter of Walter Strickland of Cokethorpe Park, Oxfordshire and of Flamborough, Yorkshire; (Burke) With crests above of Dormer: A fox statant argent and Cottrell A talbot's head couped sable... (Burke)
  • Right: Cottrell impaling Robinson of Newby (Vert, a chevron between three bucks at gaze or) with inescutcheon of pretence of Heylin, for Sir Clement Cottrell-Dormer (d.1808) of Rousham, Master of the Ceremonies (son of Sir Charles Cottrell-Dormer (d.1779)), who married firstly in 1783 Miss Heylin, and secondly Margaret Robinson; (Burke)
