| Description |
English: St. Mary's Lighthouse, just north of Whitley Bay, on the north east coast. The small tidal island is linked to the mainland by a concrete causeway, which is submerged at high tide. St. Mary's Island was once known as Bates Island, probably because it was owned by Thomas Bates surveyor for Northumberland under Queen Elizabeth I in the 1580s. |
