Description
English: St Monans Saltpans and Windmill. On the raised beach at East Braes is a windmill built in the late 18th century to pump water to the nearby salt pans. The remains of 9 salt panhouses are visible in the foreground. The water was pumped from the sea to the panhouses where the water was extracted leaving only the salt. It would take approximately 32 tons of sea water to produce 1 ton of salt. The recently restored windmill has walls 1m thick and is built of rubble and sandstone.
