| Description |
English: A full-scale replica of the Spirit of St. Louis, the airplane with which Charles Lindbergh performed the first solo transatlantic flight on May 20–21, 1927; the replica is shown with a mannequin of Lindbergh. The Spirit of St. Louis was custom-built for its task, being highly streamlined and holding enough fuel to fly for over 4,000 miles (6,400 km). It had no front windscreen because, to improve the airplane's balance and safety, some of its fuel tanks were between the engine and the pilot, blocking his forward view; Lindbergh felt this sacrifice of pilot view was worthwhile for the needs of the flight. The engine of the Spirit of St. Louis was a Wright R-790 Whirlwind air-cooled nine-cylinder radial piston engine, a very reliable engine of about 220 horsepower (160 kW); the replica has the same type of engine.
