Description

Joaquin, aged 22, spent two days trapped in the rubble of his school after it collapsed while he was in a lesson during the earthquake which struck Haiti on 12 January 2010.

He was rescued, but unfortunately his right leg had to be amputated above the knee. After treatment in hospital in Leogane he was referred to the NGO Handicap International. HI's specialists were able to design a prosthetic leg for him, and within just 10 days of receiving it he astounded doctors by walking unaided again. He's now back at school and watching the world cup with his friends. Like just about eveeryone else in Haiti, he wants Brazil to win. "I used to play a lot of football, but I can't do that again just yet" he says. "But I have been dancing in a few night clubs!"
