| Description |
English: Built for the LMS in 1945 at Crewe Works and numbered ‘4871’. Renumbered as ‘44871’ by British Railways following the 1948 nationalisation, she remained in service until 1968, the last year of scheduled steam operations on the national network.
She was one of four locos chosen to haul the ‘Fifteen Guinea Special’ on Sunday 11th August 1968. This was the last steam-hauled main-line passenger train in the UK, on which she double headed with 44781 between Carlisle and Manchester. Sold immediately into preservation, she initially remained at Carnforth. In 1972 the British Rail ban on steam was lifted and 44871 began a new career hauling main-line tours. Still very active, she is seen hauling ‘The Cathedrals Express’ railtour from Kings Cross to Lincoln. The resignalling of the WEB route has now made such tours possible on a Sunday. I caught her as she approached Holme Lode level crossing, on the two-track section of East Coast Main Line between Conington and Fletton, South of Peterborough. 9th December 2018 |
