Description
English: Monochrome image of Frederick Elliott's painting The Departure of the SS Cornwall. This painting depicts the departure from Brisbane of the first Queensland contingent for the South African War, on Wednesday 1 November 1899. SS Cornwall was a Federal Steam Navigation Co steamship that became a troopship to take the 260 men and 300 horses that the colony of Queensland sent to fight the Boers. In preparation she had been cleaned, painted and outfitted with a new galley and a bakehouse. The force was divided up into two companies, and each company occupied one side of the ship.
