English: Orient Steam Navigation Co steamship Orford at Brett's Wharf, Hamilton, Brisbane, circa 1929. A group of dignitaries poses before the ship. Orford was a 19,941 GRT ship, built at Barrow by Vickers Shipbuilding in 1928. She was a passenger liner between London, Australia and New Zealand until 1939 when she was requisitioned as a troop ship. On the 1st June 1940 she was bombed and set afire off Marseilles, subsequently being beached and abandoned. In 1947 she was refloated and scrapped at Savona. (Information taken from: J.M. Maber, North Star to Southern Cross, 1967).
In 1928 the Queensland Government leased to Messrs. Brett and Company a part of the Port Estate at Hamilton on the Brisbane River and a subsidiary company, Brett's Wharves and Stevedoring Co. Ltd., was formed to take over the firm's shipping interests. In October 1928 plans and specifications were prepared for a wharf suitable for the largest ships visiting the port. Provision was to be made for the storage and handling of general cargo, including wool and large quantities of timber. A timber wharf was subsequently built equipped with two electric cranes. The contract for the wharf was let to Messrs. Taylor Bros. of Brisbane on the 1st December 1928. The first pile was driven on the 16th January 1929 and the first ship berthed at the wharf on the 26th July. This was the Texas Oil Company's 11,628 GRT tanker Australia. (Information taken from: Edward Boyd Cullen, The construction of Brett's Wharf, Brisbane, 1933). |
