Summary
editDescriptionState Tabernacle COGIC - fmr Glenwood Avenue Baptist Church - Buffalo, New York - 20200513.jpg |
English: State Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, 234 Glenwood Avenue at Purdy Street, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. Erected in 1885 in a Gothic Revival style, the dominant architectural features are reflective of the unknown architect's subtle touch: the simple and rather austere buttresses flanking the entrance and appended at regular intervals to the stone walls on both the front and lateral façades; the squat corner tower, boasting a low-pitched pyramidal roof in place of a steeple and significantly less tall than the roofline of the main building. Construction began in 1880 on what was originally intended to be the new home of All Saints Episcopal Church, but that congregation sold the land and the partially finished building to Baptist minister E. L. Hedstrom, who with the help of the Buffalo Baptist Union completed the building, establishing there a Sunday school and, in 1892, a full-fledged congregation, the Glenwood Avenue Baptist Church. Records indicate that Glenwood Avenue Baptist continued in operation at this address at least as late as 1954, but probably not long afterward; its current occupant was founded in 1941 as a storefront congregation but, with its purchase of the building, became Buffalo's first Church of God in Christ to worship in a dedicated church building, and owes its name to the fact that it often played host to state jurisdictional conventions of the International Church of God in Christ organization. |
