The Boston Home of Mr. Sumner, at 20 Hancock Street. 244 STATESMEN filled by the Legislature, and the Free Soilers tobe awarded the United States Senator. Thisagreement naturally roused great wrath amongthe Whigs, who saw that Websters place in theUnited States Senate was to pass out of theircontrol. There was some delay, however, incarrying out the provisions of the covenant,and it was not until after a contest which lastedmore than two months that Sumner was finallyelected. Robert Rantoul, Jr., was the candidate of someof the Democrats who held themselves alooffrom the coalition. Robert C. Winthrop, whohad been appointed by the Governor to fill thetemporary vacancy caused by Websters resign-ing his seat in the Senate to take a place in theCabinet of President Fillmore, was the choiceof the Whigs.
