A tub ofhot water was in readiness for plunging him inpreparatory to taking off his bristles. Unfortu-nately, however, the water was too hot, or per-haps when I soused the pig into it I kept himthere too long. At any rate, when I undertookto remove the bristles, expecting that they would SALMON P. CHASE 147 come off almost of themselves, I found to my dis-may that I could not stir one of them. In pig-killing phrase, the bristles were set. I pulledand pulled in vain. What was I to do ? Thepig must be dressed. About that there must beno failure. I thought of my cousins razors, anice new pair, just suited to the use of a spruceyoung clergyman as he was. No sooner thoughtof than done. I got the razors and shaved thepig from tail to snout. I think the shaving wasa success. The razors were damaged by theoperation, however, but they were carefullycleaned
