Description

Statue of a satyr with a panther

Roman, Campania, from a villa in Telesia, 100 BC-AD 50

Marble

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli MANN 6325

1106-004

Bacchus, the god of wine and fertility, had many weird and wonderful followers, including forest-dwelling, pointy-eared satyrs that were part man and part goat. The panther at this satyr's feet and the grapes, pinecone, and fruit gathered in his goatskin tell us that he is a companion of the god. The Romans wanted to tame nature and bring it to their homes, and marble statues like this were often placed in the walled gardens of houses and villas.
