At the height of adversity between American centerboard compromise design and British plank-on-edge design, this yankee sloop was the sworn opponent of the English cutter Stranger. A year after this picture, Captain Charlie Barr would sail the cutter Minerva (William Fife, Jr., 1888) from Scotland and pose an even greater threat on the Eastern seaboard, cleaning up the 40-footer class in her first two seasons, before the sloops Gossoon and Mariquita were designed in response by Edward Burgess.
