Summary edit

Description
English: Steeply dipping slate vein In the Blaenau Ffestiniog area the slate veins dip steeply downwards, with the angle of the dip increasing westwards to almost vertical in the direction of Blaenau. This is why the majority of quarries in the area are underground workings. In the Llanberis and Bethesda areas, on the other hand, the dip of slate veins is much gentler and the rock can be worked by means of open terraced quarries. Here, at Cwt y Bugail, the dip is less severe than further west and so that open pit working was initially possible.
