Stick Fishermen Of Sri Lanka |
Description |
500px provided description: Steve McCurry?s iconic photo of the Sri Lankan stilt fishermen sitting perched far from shore trying to catch a fish in a rough sea inspired me to visit Sri Lanka I wanted to photograph that scene. Stilt fishing is a method of fishing unique to the island country of Sri Lanka, located off the coast of India in the Indian Ocean. The fishermen sit on a cross bar called a petta tied to a vertical pole and driven into the sand a few meters offshore. From this high position, the fishermen casts his line, and waits until a fish comes along to be caught. The whole area between the towns of Ahangama, Welligama and Unawatuna is full of fishing poles so if you are keen to photograph some stilt fishermen head to the south shore of Sri Lanka. These are small coastal towns located in Matara District, and famous for its stilt fishermen, not the ?real ones?. I took all this images there.
