Summary edit

Description
English: Stoke Mill. There has been a mill on this site for about 700 years, perhaps dating back to Roman times. Stoke Mill > 1353400 is built of weatherboard over a brick base and has a pantiled roof. The water had a fall of 3.60 metres to power the two breast shot wheels and a wooden chute served to carry the water away from the foundations. When milling corn the wheels were driving seven pairs of stones, which made this mill one of the largest in the county. It was one of only a few mills in Norfolk to have the stones driven from the spur wheel set above them. In 1814 Jeremiah and James Colman moved into the mill starting the production of mustard, which today is famous all over the world. When the business outgrew the mill, the Colmans moved to Carrow where they still are today. The mill wheel was removed in 1952 and the remainder of the machinery was sold off in 1963. The mill was then converted into a restaurant and bar from 1969 onwards, using the original timber. The first floor is in the process of being refurbished for use as a business/conference centre.
