Description

The church dates from around 1100, but could be earlier due to the presence of Roman tegula tiles in the masonry. The centre of the village has moved about 1½ miles to the South, probably following the plague around 1350.

The church consists of nave, chancel, south porch, north Chapel, north organ chamber and vestry. The chancel arch was removed by the 15th century. The South doorway is Norman, there is also a Norman window in the North wall of the nave. The chancel arch was removed by the 15th century. The South porch is 19th-century. The north Chapel was built in 1874, along with the organ chamber and vestry. The Chapel was erected by Marianne, wife of Philip Hermann Meyer of Stondon Place.

There is a Belfry at the West end, weather-boarded with a small octagonal spire of wooden shingles. Inside there is a massive oak framework to support the Belfry dating from the 15th century. There are three bells, one dates from 1420. There is a chancel screen from about 1480, the pulpit and reading desk are dated 1630. There are several brasses one dated 1570 in the sanctuary, showing John Carr and his two wives, the others have been mounted on the walls near the Chapel. The octagonal font is from the 15th century.

There is a Memorial to William Byrd, who lived at Stondon Massey from 1594 until his death in 1623. A copy of his will is also on a wall in the vestry. He desired to be buried near his wife, at Stondon “where my dwelling is”. It is not known where his grave is, the memorial was erected in 1923.
