WRECK OF STONE'S MONOPLANE, INTERNATIONAL AVIATION MEET, CHICAGO, 1911

Date: 1911 Source Type: Postcard Publisher, Printer, Photographer: Max Rigot Postmark: None Collection: Steven R. Shook Remark: The International Aviation Meet of 1911 took place at Grant Park along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Chicago, Illinois. Numerous aviation pioneers from seven countries participated in the event. The wrecked Queen monoplane shown in this image, named the Stars and Stripes, was flown by Arthur B. Stone. On August 17, 1911, Stone was flying approximately 1,000 feet above the ground when his airplane's controls would not function properly. Stone attempted several times to try to regain control of the aircraft, but to no avail. He therefore lept from the monoplane and fell into Lake Michigan where he was rescued about 30 minutes later by a motorboat. Two other aviators, William R. Badger and St. Croix Johnstone, perished at this aviation meet the day prior to Stone's wreck. Stone continued his work in aviation and died in 1943.
