Description
English: Stone amulet. The demon Lamashtu stands on a donkey and suckles a wild pig and a jackal. Lamashtu preyed on women during childbirth and on their newborn babies. There is an incomplete Akkadian cuneiform inscription, an incantation to Lamashtu. Such amulets were supposed to protect those mothers and their babies. 800-550 BCE. Said to be from northwest Mesopotamia; purchased from Sir Woolley. British Museum.
