The locomotives are an exciting novelty toanyone with an interest in machinery. These powerful mountainclimbers are constructed with the utmost nicety of detail. Thepresent equipment of the road consists of six locomotives and sixpassenger coaches. The locomotives, built by the Baldwin Loco-motive Works of Philadelphia, are of the four-cylinder Xauclaincompound pattern; the high and low pressure cylinders are 10 and15 inches in diameter respectively, and 22-inch stroke. The steampressure carried in the boiler is 200 pounds. Each engine is providedwith two double steel cog wheels, through which the power isapplied; extending from the sides of these wheels are four corrugatedsurfaces, upon which the powerful steam and hand brakes do theirwork. Any one of these brakes is sufficiently powerful to stop thelocomotive and train. The steam cylinders are also fitted with theLeChatlier water brake, and are utilized on the downward journeyas air compressors to regulate the speed of the train. 10
