Peinture présentée par l'artiste au Salon de 1839 (numéro 1833 du livret), avec la description suivante : "Le moment choisi par l’artiste est celui où les strélitz, ayant reconnu Vangad, le traînent vers le palais des czars et menacent d’y mettre le feu si on ne leur livre le plus jeune des princes Nariskin. Le patriarche, confiant dans une image de la Vierge qui passait pour miraculeuse, prend cette image d’une main, et le jeune prince de l’autre, et se présente ainsi aux révoltés, entouré des princesses en larmes et demandant grâce ; mais les strélitz s’emparent du prince, le condamnent, ainsi que le médecin Vangad, au supplice des dix mille morceaux, et les massacrent sous les yeux de toute la cour épouvantée."
