Description |
English: This drawing was executed to illustrate a publication or paper on Indian Architecture entitled 'Fragments of Indian Architecture selected principally from the excavations in the Mountain of Elora near Aurungabad in the Degan as also from the Island of Eliphanta Bombay.' The interior of this cave, dedicated to the Jain saint Parsvanath, has columns with square shafts, turning into the vase and foliage motif, amalaka capitals and plain brackets. It is visited from an upper level of the nearby Indra Sabha, and like the rest of the northern Jain group at Ellora dates from the early 9th century under Rashtrakuta patronage. reference |
