Description
English: original caption of "Sudanic blacks in Africa". A self-made map apparently intending to show some kind of racial definition of "Sudanese", along with "semi-Sudanese with Bantu race features". It is unclear (unreferenced) if this is based on any kind of serious ethnographic literature.
based on the use in the Greek article "Σουδανόφωνοι νέγροι" it seems to transpire that this image represents the historical racial category known in German as Sudanneger ("Sudanic blacks"). A definition is found in the Deutsches Kolonial-Lexikon of 1920, "Sudanneger nennt die Völkerkunde jene weniger somatisch als sprachlich vonden Bantu verschiedene Eingeborenengruppe Afrikas, die sich zwischen die Bantu im Süden und den Südrand der Sahara einlagert." ("Sudan-negroes is the ethnological term for that indigenous group of Africa which is not so much somatically [physiologically] but linguistically distinct from the Bantu, and whose territory is between the Bantu to the south and the southern fringes of the Sahara.") The corresponding historical category of en:Sudanic languages is not recognized today, but would roughly correspond to what is today known as the "Niger-Congo A" phylum. (it should also be noted that "Sudanic negroes" is strictly speaking a tautology, as already sudan (سودان) is simply the Arabic term for "negroes".)
