Die Sonnenblume war im Herbst 2001 vom Fotografen gepflückt und anschließend mehrere Wochen lang getrocknet worden. Danach wurde die Rückseite der Sonnenblume zur Stabilisierung mit Kunstharz ausgegossen. Schließlich wurden die Kerne der 1ten, 11ten,...,81ten Spirale schwarz markiert. Diese Hilfsmarkierungen garantieren ein zuverlässiges Zählen der 89 Spiralen im Uhrzeigersinn.
Fünf Jahre später (am 8.7.2006) wurde die Sonnenblume mit einer Canon 350D fotografiert und in das Digitalbild die schwarzen und roten Zahlen bzw. Markierungen mit Paint Shop Pro 6 eingefügt.
Nach dem Fotografieren wurden die 1te,11te,...,141te der gegengläufigen 144 Spiralen entgegen dem Uhrzeigersinn markiert und gezählt. Im Digitalbild ist allerdings nur die 1te, 11te, 131te und 144te Spirale rot gekennzeichnet.
