Sunset On The Rails |
Description |
500px provided description: This is the Norfolk & Western Class J steam locomotive 611 entering the rail yard at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke. The locomotive was built in 1950 at a cost of $251K. The Class J engines were used to pull passenger trains and could pull 15 cars at 110 mph. The 611 was retired in 1959, returned to excursion service in 1982 and retired again in 1994. This is the last surviving Class J engine and is the subject of a restoration campaign with the objective of bringing her back to running condition.
