DescriptionSurface imperfections 02 - NW side view - Aspiration and Literature - The Arts of Peace - Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway - 2013-09-30.jpg |
English: Looking at surface imperfections in the northwest side of the statue "Aspiration and Literature", one of two statues that make up the work The Arts of Peace. The Arts of Peace are statues which adorn either side of the southern entrance of the Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway in Washington, D.C., in the United States. They were designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser, and erected in 1951.
"Aspiration and Literature" was cast by the A. Bruni Foundry in Rome, Italy. The plaster model of the work had been left exposed to the elements for some weeks, causing pitting and other damage. Although much of this was repaired, much damage remained. Additionally, the foundry's work was not of the highest quality. Both these factors caused the surface of the bronze statue to have extensive pits (some as much as a three millimeters deep) and holes. This left the gilding unable to adhere properly to the bronze, and it flakes off after about 20 years. |
