It is interesting to record that theSaxon font at Walberton, after having been divorced from the originalcushion-stone on which it used to rest, and set up on a sort of ornamentalflower-pot, has once more been placed upon its cushion-stones throughthe taste and zeal of the present Vicar, the Rev. W. J. Hunter. It may besafely said that no other county in England has preserved so many Saxonfonts as Sussex. Fig 5. The south doorway seems to have been given a newinternal arch of four-centred form in Pulboroughstone, at some date in the late 14th or 15th Century. In the north wall of the nave, near the western end,a small doorway was inserted in this period, which,like the west window of the aisle, has been dressed upin the fashion of a later style. (Fig. 5). The chamfered POLING AND THE KNIGHTS HOSPITALLERS. 81 jambs, with a roll and cushion stop, are in Caen stone,tooled with a broad chisel, except two blocks of chalkjust below the springing. The elegantly moulded archof two-centred form is fashioned out of exactly fourlarge pieces of chalk, the chamfer of the jambs givingplace to a hollow, with a bead planted in the centre,and the small label being worked out of the samestone. The internal arch in chalk, of segmental form,belongs to the later, while the jambs are those of theearlier period. This doorway is now blocked up, butthe old wooden door remains in position. ✓A 3-
