Summary edit

Description
English: Situated in Town Hall Lane Swanage this Gaol was built in 1802 and used from 1803. An inscription above the entrance says " Erected for the Prevention of Vice and Immorality by the Friends of Religion & Good Order 1803". It was paid for by public subscription. A simple construction measuring 5.5 feet by 7 feet was used to control rowdyism in the streets and hold the offenders for a short time. Situated to the right of the Gaol is a water pump that is believed to have been installed by George Burt in 1881.
