Sydney Ferry CARABELLA (later KARABELLA) at HMS POWERFUL 1905 to 1911

Summary edit

Description
English: Sydney Ferry CARABELLA (later KARABELLA) at HMS POWERFUL 1905 to 1911 This image from a glass plate negative produced between 1905 and 1911 shows HMS 'Powerful' and the ferry 'Carabella' in Farm Cove, Sydney. 'Powerful' was the largest and most impressive of the Royal Navy's Australia Station flagships and she featured in Sydney's 'A list' social scene between 1905 and 1911. During this time the American Great White Fleet visited Sydney in 1908 and showed Australians what a real navy could look like. It swung public opinion in favour of a national naval force from which grew the infant Royal Australian Navy in 1913. In the foreground the 1897- built Sydney ferry 'Carabella' heads for Circular Quay. She was rebuilt in 1916 and was re-named 'Karrabella' to fit in with the ferry company's new 'K' naming sequence.
